an ad (the first of three!) that i made for copywriting class, featuring a cowboy & indian coming out of a television set, & eating popcorn with the typical all-american household. (click on it! it looks better when it grows.)

i had copywriter’s block (is there such a thing?) for fourteen days. during the first week, i didnt know what to advertise. during the second, i had a plethora of ideas but couldn’t execute them well.

at one point i thought of advertising kinder surprise using some sexual innuendo. yes, i wanted to taint the candy of your childhood, har har har! (one ad involved a boy with his pants down, revealing a kinder surprise egg between his legs, with a tagline that read, “play with it. you know you can’t wait.”)

i had to scrap it for obvious reasons.

i finally decided on advertising popcorn after having some act ii microwave popcorn today. i was inspired by the fact that you have to share your popcorn with someone for it to be a fun eating experience — i bet you’ve never eaten popcorn alone & enjoyed it! — & by woody allen’s film, “the purple rose of cairo”, where a character steps out of the silverscreen & into the human world.

i thought to myself, if my favorite film characters did this in real life, i’d totally share my popcorn with them. that’d be the first thing i’d do. hence the tagline, “share the fun!”

don’t mind the graphics, as this isn’t a design class — but to be quite honest it was a struggle to design this & i was so relieved when it was over. i vectored this on photoshop (not illustrator, for it has conked out on me permanently), alternating between using my left & right (the latter was totally weakened & painful thanks to CTS) to control my fingerboard. i decided not to use any reference pictures, but to draw simple shapes instead (kind of like those ads & cartoons in the 1950s).

also i don’t mean to offend anyone with the simplistic representations of race & gender. this was inspired by the 1950s, so i guess, there’s the (rather lame) explanation you might be looking for.

i shall hopefully finish my other ads soon! watch out for stormtroopers & luke skywalker jumping off of the silverscreen, & sadako crawling out of a drive-in movie.
